Fish tacos 6.50!

Postby Serendipity » Wed Aug 17, 2011 6:08 pm

I know how much y'all love tacos, so I thought I'd share. I recently went to dinner at this fancy taco place on 14th street, and the tacos were okay, combined we ordered different kinds so that we could try them all. I think for the price I was expecting something phenomenal....I'll admit that I was channeling Airborne  since I afterwards I was saying that they were expensive - I mean, why should a taco be expensive? At any rate, the very next day I was walking down park road and saw a sign that said Fish Tacos 6.50! in front of Paila restaurant. Having tacos on the brain, I thought I'd give them a shot. The owner and his son are Chilean and very anxious to make a good impression as they just opened recently. They used tilapia which is probably pretty accurate - low grade crumbly fish, though those accustomed to fancy-restaurant fish tacos might be expecting a higher caliber of fish. At any rate, they were pretty good - basically they didn't fuck anything up - gauc was good, not great, tortillas were good quality, and I felt that 6 -7 bucks to be reasonably cheap. Pic below:

Nice.

And if you're putting fish in a taco, it'd be dumb to put a "nice" fish in it when you're putting all that other stuff on there. If the fish is great, you wouldn't need all the other stuff :) Anyway, I like tilapia, so that'd be fine by me.

Right?!

I spent $7 and change on one steak taco, one pastor taco and a chicken quesadilla. And this is quality stuff. God I love the taco bar.

no, 2 tacos but so much filling and two tortillas a piece, I was pretty stuffed and I hadn't eaten all day. They had other stuff as well but I am a sucker for fish tacos. The owner seemed like a nice, legit kind of small business owner that I HOPE is still viable in this country of big business/box/chains. Also, keep in mind, rent in this neighborhood is still $25 a sq ft (per year). Cheap by DC standards but lets just say around 6K per month. Which may explain the high prices compared to Pittsburgh/Gaithersburg. Sure you can spend $10 in gas and 1-1/2 hour of time round trip to Adam's restaurant to save $2.

Oh, and the bahn mi sandwiches at pho 14 next door are simple but tasty and 4 bucks.

What are the hours of the Chilean place and the Vietnamese place, if you noticed? As it isn't on the web site.

Pho 14 is only open til 10p on the weekends, not sure about the chilean place, probably similar. you could try calling. They are both definitely open for lunch and judging by the fact that the chilean place serves breakfast sammies, I would think earlier.

I take a two minute ride down the river, have fun, catch some tasty panfish, not shit fed talipia, come home make a black bean/corn/cilantro/tomato and lime salsa , heat up a few corn tortillas on the gas flame, shove them all together and eat them. Cost about 50c. in gas, 25c in tortillas, 2$ in corn, beans and a little cilantro and grape tomatoes from the garden and 20c for some of the lime marinade from the bottle in the fridge and bingo! more FRESH fish tacos than can be eaten in one sitting.
Mortgage is cheap too. I don't know how you guys and girls can handle it up there....
That's not going anywhere

I lived in Richmond for about 6 months, and liked it. I would have stayed, but I could not find a job.

My ancestors would crawl out of the grave and kill me if I ever moved to Richmond.
