speed camera ticket?

Postby Serendipity » Wed Mar 07, 2012 3:56 pm

Bloody Hell! I just got notice from zipcar - I was using their car for work and the car was photographed going 46 mph in a 30 mph zone - on Porter street where it crosses over the RCP and looks like a highway. $150! First of all, I've gone that way 1,000 times and never noticed a camera there. Is there any other way they could take your pic? Say from one of those mobile "your speed is" signs? a cop car? I need take another look - EVERYONE SPEEDS THERE! They could have made 10,000 in one day alone.

The District is rolling out pure for profit cameras now. They offer no deterrent to speeding because you don't even know they are there. Instead of the giant pole mounted cameras you can see a block away they are now installing this mailbox size grey or beige boxes with the cameras coming out the back. There is nothing on the front of it and it looks like any other utility box. The only warning is a "Speed Limit X, Photo Enforced" sign nearby but they have those all over the place without cameras so people don't pay attention to them. They have these on 295, and one is behind a bridge that you can't even see the thing until you go past it and it flashes. $125 for up to 10 over, and $150 for 11+ over, or something like that.

Might as well start riding a restricted 50cc scooter so you can't exceed 35mph however hard you try.

Yeah, they put in a few of those stealth cameras in MoCo as well. Keep it slow if your north of downtown SS on Georgia Ave.

The Post just had an article about how DC's ticket collection has become stuff of envy for other cities. Given how much of a money maker it was for the city, I'm sure those in charge were all in favor of upping this enforcement.

You'll see them using cars that have cameras and operators in them now. They park on North Capitol in the 4 lane section and on Military hwy between rcp and 16th st on pull offs. Also on 495 near the construction around silver spring.

Montgomery county only permits speed cameras near schools, however they've been expanding the school zones to make more money. The charge in MD is $40.

Can't remember where this was, but I recall a news story about some very small town that could consider every foot of its roadway to be in a school zone because it had a centrally located school.
Its a long walk through the city in the rain, its a long walk from train to train.

That is the one I am talking about that is behind the bridge support.

I have to go out to reston for work tomorrow. A $40 speed ticket would not be a big deal, its just these $125, $150 tickets that kill me. How is VA with speed camera tickets? They need an app so that when you come up with a route, you can check it for known speed camera locations.

I just found this link
http://www.wjla.com/articles/2011/11/d- ... 69503.html

and there is the 2300 block of porter street as well as your Benning/295 listed! Take note of these locations! It looks like they are netting the district around 50 Million per year!

Is there any question that these cameras are only to make money? AAA disapproves:

If you have a recent Garmin with lifetime map updates it updates locations of cameras pretty well. There is an app for the iPhone that shows locations too.

There are a few camera tracker apps, I had one but it was clunky and didn't work well. I know that Cincinnati Microwave makes a new radar detector that looks like a gps and has camera info built in. Plus its updateable and you can add custom waypoints for cameras.

Plus it looks like a gps so the Virginia po po won't try to ticket you for it.

I figured as much. Too bad the ticket was from Feb 26!
